Use Canva's AI to Create Social Media Content

Tool:Canva
AI Feature:Magic Write + AI Image Generation
Time:10-15 minutes
Difficulty:Beginner

What This Does

Canva's AI features let you generate social media captions, promotional graphics, and even photo-realistic food imagery — all without design skills or a marketing team.

Before You Start

  • Create a free Canva account at canva.com (free tier works for this)
  • Have your restaurant's name, vibe, and colors in mind
  • Have your phone handy to photograph a dish or the space (or use existing photos)

Steps

1. Find the AI writing feature

Open Canva and click Create a design → choose Instagram Post (or Facebook Post, or Story). Once inside the editor, click on any text box you want to fill, then look for the magic wand icon (✨) that appears in the toolbar above the text box. Click it to open Magic Write.

2. Tell it what you need

In the Magic Write prompt box, type a brief description of what you want. Be specific:

  • "3 caption options for a Friday night special — short rib with red wine reduction, romantic atmosphere, casual Italian restaurant"
  • "An announcement for our Sunday brunch launching next week at [Restaurant Name]"
  • "A captions for a photo of our new cocktail menu — playful, fun bar vibe"

Click Generate and Canva produces 3 options.

3. Pick, edit, and complete the design

Select the caption you like (or combine two). Then use Canva's templates to build the visual: search for "restaurant post" or "food Instagram" in the template search bar, pick one that fits your style, and swap in your own photo or use Canva's image library. Change colors to match your brand, then click Download or Share → Publish to social media directly from Canva.

Real Example

Scenario: It's Wednesday and you want to post about your weekend prime rib special.

What you type in Magic Write: "Write 3 Instagram captions for our Saturday night prime rib special — slow-roasted, served with au jus and creamy horseradish. We're a neighborhood American grill in [City]. Warm and welcoming vibe."

What you get:

  1. "Saturday just got a whole lot better. Our slow-roasted prime rib is back — perfectly seasoned, served with rich au jus and housemade creamy horseradish. Reserve your table while they last."
  2. "There's nothing quite like a properly done prime rib. Saturday only — slow-roasted all day, worth every bite."
  3. "Weekend plans: sorted. Our prime rib special is back Saturday night. Limited availability — we'll see you at the table."

Pick your favorite, drop it on a photo, and post in 15 minutes total.

Tips

  • Keep a running list of your restaurant's menu items and seasonal specials in a Notes doc — paste it into the prompt for faster, more relevant output
  • For photos: even a decent smartphone photo works well in Canva templates; use bright natural light from a window for food shots
  • If a caption is too long for Instagram, ask Magic Write: "Make this under 125 characters"
  • Canva's brand kit (free and paid tiers) lets you lock in your fonts and colors so every post stays on-brand

Tool interfaces change — if Magic Write has moved, look for a wand/AI icon in the text editor or check the left sidebar for "AI tools."
